MUSICALS GO POP Director: Brad Snelling Musical Director (Rehearsals) Ian Jones Musical Director (Show week) Ed Nurse Choreography: Emma Swain Alderley and Wilmslow Musical Theatre Company This was an evening of chart hitting numbers by iconic artists their works of which were turned into “Jukebox” musicals. The show featured a song set of 31 numbers, all bona fide chart toppers. Entering the auditorium with its subdued lighting created an atmosphere. There was an open stage, back rostra, a gauze backdrop, and an impressive lighting design (Megan Ashbrook) to give a “cellar club” ambience. This allowed the music to be the only focal point so that no introductions were needed. The concept was original allowing the music to stand on its own as it did in its original format. The work of the rehearsal M.D. paid off as there was a relaxed confidence from the company whether ensemble or solo. The leads were varied so that there wasn’t just a line-up of performers who delivered everything: the music was well shared out. For the show a second M.D skilfully kept control of the on stage band and did more than just accompany the singers. Finally, the movement / choreography was the wrapping on this jukebox entertainment of show tunes. The company presentation of black including the show logo gave everyone equal status. There were some changes for non-ensemble numbers to give that personal touch to the drama of the lyrics. The wall of sound began with “Bohemian Rhapsody” which set the bench mark for what was to come. There were many performances of note including Katie Fisher strutting her stuff with “I Go Out Walking (After Midnight)” from “Always....Patsy Cline”. Emma Swain soulfully covered “It’s All Coming Back to Me” from “Bat Out of Hell”. A medley of songs from “The Drifters’ Girl” and “Motown, the Musical” with
