ACT Theatre Reviews 2021-2022

Joanne Shephard took the role of leader of the gang, Elsie. I have seen Joanne perform many times and she never disappoints. Enviably, she can turn her hand to any part. I felt that in this role Joanne was in her element and her enjoyment tangible. She gave an excellent comic performance, with hilarious facial expressions and perfect comic timing. Although her character has front and is bold and brash, she has a sensitive side and cares for the wellbeing of her friends whilst encouraging them to live their best lives. We all need an Elsie in our lives! Siobhan Edge played a more matronly part as Olive – a past girl guide leader (of which she reminds us once or twice!). She tries to keep the others in line, but it doesn’t always work! We learn more about Olive as the play develops and it turns out there is much more to her character than meets the eye. Siobhan created a fabulous, four-dimensional, believable, character who, despite her sternness, wins our hearts with her warmth. Her performance was so professional, and her stage presence was simply beautiful and compelling to watch. An excellent, strong comedy performance. Cathy Hurley played an assured performance as Gladys, who goes on a major journey through the play, being timid and reluctant to embodying her alter ego, Madonna! Her portrayal of Gladys brought a lovely warm almost motherly energy to the stage. It was good fun to watch her bringing out her naughty side! She created an enjoyable and engaging character and gave a sterling performance. Paddy Darnell-Walsh gave a confident performance as the sadistic manager, and Mummy’s boy, Dave. L-R: Cath Hurley, Paddy Darnell-Walsh, Siobhan Edge, Joanne Shephard
