ACT Theatre Reviews 2021-2022

you were awesome! Rachel Bailey played the part of Sybil Merton – Lord Arthur’s bride to be. I have seen Rachel perform many times and performed alongside her recently and she never fails to impress me! Her portrayal was delightful to watch, with crystal clear dialogue and a tongue in cheek approach to her ‘simple’ character. I particularly liked it when she had her ‘evil’ thoughts and delight about murder, and she gave her ‘nice’ character a twist with her sweet smile. Rachel was also word perfect – I applaud the effort and hard work that was put in! David Pilkington took the role of the Dean of Paddington and played a convincing character with a self-assured and expressive performance. Steve Cooke played the main mastermind, the butler, Baines, and brought a calm and collected energy to the stage with him, matching the coolness of his character. Eleanor Jolley played Lady Windermere and upon her entrance filled the stage with her dress! She gave an assured and focused performance, with an enviable stage presence. Beverly McKiernan took the role of Lady Clementina Beauchamp. Her portrayal brought a lovely warm energy, which was enjoyable and engaging to watch. I particularly enjoyed the scene when she continually fails to eat the poisoned sweet, and I think she had fun with all her comic possibilities in this scene. Simon Bailey played the part of Mr Podgers, the Chiromantic. I thought his interpretation of the character was really clever and well thought out. His accent was just the perfect combination of cockney/well-spoken that we instantly knew he was from a very different background – despite his suit. We also knew he was a bit shifty (though unfortunately the programme had blown his cover, so we knew what was coming!). Marilyn Crowther played the edgy mother-in-law, Lady Julia Merton, and is certainly no stranger to the stage. She gave a compelling and committed performance. Like many of the actors in this production, she was so enjoyable to watch. Emma-Jayne Samworth played the part of Nellie, the maid. Though
